Volleyball Great Yasutaka Matsudaira Passes Away
Inducted as a Coach 1998
Volleyball Hall of Fame Inductee Yasutaka Matsudaira passed away on December 31, 2011 after battling emphysema. Matsudaira was a player, coach, innovator, strategist, administrator, and leader. He was involved in every aspect of the sport of volleyball, with some of his greatest achievements coming during his period as a coach including three Olympic medals.
Matsudaira has said that volleyball was a heaven-sent present, like an orchestra, with himself making strenuous efforts and devoting a lifetime of service to become the best conductor in the world. He saw his task as enabling the orchestra to prepare as best they could, unifying and harmonizing the unique tone quality of each different player. As such, Matsudaira was a master technician and strategist, and he revolutionized the game by devising the multiple quick attack. This technique was eventually fully adapted to the women’s game and has long since been copied by many aspiring coaches.
"Matsuidaira was a giant in the volleyball world and the first non-U.S.A. Inductee into the Volleyball Hall of Fame," said Volleyball Hall of Fame Executive Director George Mulry. "He leaves behind an incredible legacy not only from the sidelines but also as a visioned administrator."
The Volleyball Hall of Fame and the whole volleyball community offer its sincere condolences.
Congratulations to our 2011 Inductees and Award Winners
