Night of Heroes Police & Fire Challenge|
On Saturday, June 21st the Volleyball Hall of Fame is excited to host the FDNY volleyball team for the 1st annual Night of Heroes Police and Fire Challenge at Holyoke High School. The tournament will feature the FDNY team versus Holyoke, Springfield, Easthampton and other area fire departments.
This event is part of a full day of volleyball at Holyoke High School that kicks off with the first ever Massachusetts Boys High School All-State Game and Skills Competition at 2pm featuring the top players from across Massachusetts.
"We are truly humbled and honored to host the FDNY and our local fire departments in the Birthplace of Volleyball." said VHF Executive Director George Mulry. "This is going to be a terrific day of volleyball and a great way for us to celebrate true heroes who risk their lives every day."
On Friday, June 20th, the Volleyball Hall of Fame will host a welcome reception for members of the FDNY, area police and firefighters, and the local business community. At the reception, the Hall of Fame will unveil a new display called Celebrating Humanity through Sport that pays homage to the phrase used in the 2011 World Police & Fire Games held in New York City. The new display will feature the retired jerseys of two members of the FDNY team whose lives were lost on 9/11.
"After we lost 2 guys from the FDNY Volleyball Team on September 11, we made them a promise, 'We Will Always Remember.' Since that time, we have taken Mike Carlo and Tim Welty everywhere the FDNY Volleyball Team goes and the sincere, heartfelt, support we receive from everyone is truly amazing." said Bill Miccio, FDNY Lieutenant. "And, thanks to the Volleyball Hall of Fame exhibit, they will never be forgotten."
The Night of Heroes Police and Fire Challenge opens with the FDNY squaring off against the Holyoke Fire Department at 6pm followed by Springfield FD vs. Easthampton FD.
The Night of Heroes tournament is FREE to attend and we will be assisting the Holyoke Fire Department in collecting donations for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. The NFFF offers support programs for survivors of fallen firefighters as well as award scholarships to spouses, children, and step children of fallen firefighters.
Community partnerships with Big Y, 90 Meat Outlet, N. Elm Butcher Block, Chicopee Provisions, Freihofer's Bakery Outlet, the Tavern Westfield, Cerrato's, and Friendly's have made it possible for us to donate 100% of the event proceeds directly to the National Firefighters Foundation.
Please join us on Saturday, June 21st to welcome these true heroes to Holyoke!
