BIOGRAPHY
Considered one of the best volleyball players in Dutch history, Ronald Zwerver represented The Netherlands in three consecutive Olympics.
Zwerver made his Olympic debut at the 1988 Seoul Olympics where his team had a strong showing as they finished fifth. He and his team followed that performance by winning the silver medal at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992.
He then helped lead his team to the much coveted gold medal at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta by defeating long-time rival Italy with a remarkable five-set marathon in the finals, one of the great matches in Olympic volleyball history.
In 1996 he also helped lead The Netherlands to the FIVB World League title in Rotterdam, shortly before the Atlanta Games.
Zwerver was named the Best Attacker in two World Championships – 1990 and 1994 – as well as at the World League in 1990 and 1991. He was also named the Best Server at the Olympics in 1992, the World League in 1991, and the European Championships in 1993.
After playing in 463 matches for the Dutch National Team, as well as six pro seasons in Italy and one in Belgium, Zwerver retired from playing in 1999 and turned to coaching.
Zwerver spent ten years as an assistant coach and head coach internationally from 2006-2016. He was an assistant coach with the Dutch Men’s National Team for the European Championships in Bulgaria in 2015 as well as an assistant coach for the Women’s National Team and its trip to the World Championships in Italy and the Olympic Qualification Tournament in 2012.
He served as head coach of Ortec Nesselande, a Dutch club that was national champions, in 2007.
Zwerver currently serves as the assistant coach at Oregon State University in the United States, a position he has held since 2016.
Following a storied international career with three Olympic Games appearances as one of the top attackers in the world, we are proud to induct Ronald Zwerver into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame as an indoor player.
