BIOGRAPHY
Excelling in either indoor or beach volleyball is an achievement few can claim, but Ana Paula Henkel is a rare talent who mastered both disciplines, leaving an indelible mark on the sport in her native Brazil and beyond. Her versatility, skill, and tenacity have made her one of the most respected and accomplished players in volleyball history.
Born in the small town of Lavras in Brazil, Ana Paula’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a volleyball icon is nothing short of remarkable. She first made her mark in the indoor game, where she quickly rose to prominence as a key player for the Brazilian National Team. Ana Paula's prowess on the court was evident early on, and she played a vital role in helping Brazil secure a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Her leadership and exceptional performance also guided Brazil to three FIVB Grand Prix Championships in 1994, 1996, and 1998.
Ana Paula’s talent, however, was not confined to the indoor arena. She made a seamless transition to beach volleyball, where she quickly established herself as one of the sport’s elite players. Her versatility and adaptability were on full display as she became the only player, male or female, to win FIVB World Tour gold medals with five different partners. This extraordinary achievement underscores her ability to excel regardless of the teammate by her side, a testament to her deep understanding of the game and her exceptional skill set.
From 2003 to 2007, Ana Paula dominated the FIVB circuit, earning Best Server awards along the way—a reflection of her powerful and precise serving game that often left opponents scrambling. She won two FIVB Tour Championships, first in 2003 with partner Sandra Pires and later in 2008 with Shelda Bede. Her partnership with Shelda Bede in 2008 was particularly fruitful, as the duo not only claimed the Tour Championship but were also honored as the FIVB Team of the Year, solidifying their status as one of the most formidable pairs in beach volleyball history.
Ana Paula Henkel’s extraordinary talents and achievements on both the indoor and beach volleyball courts have earned her a place among the sport’s greatest. For her unparalleled contributions to volleyball, the International Volleyball Hall of Fame is proud to induct Ana Paula Henkel as a Beach Player.
