BIOGRAPHY
Throughout the history of volleyball, there have been individuals whose influence extends far beyond any single match, tournament, or generation. Denis Le Breuilly is one of those rare leaders. Through decades of service as a referee, educator, administrator, mentor, and advocate, he helped guide the growth of ParaVolley while advancing volleyball officiating and governance on a global scale.
Born in Jersey, Channel Islands, and deeply committed to the values of sport, Le Breuilly dedicated more than four decades to creating opportunities for athletes and strengthening the organizations that support them. His work touched virtually every level of volleyball, from local development programs to the Paralympic Games.
His most significant impact came through World ParaVolley, where he served as interim General Manager from 2006 to 2008 and as Sport Director from 2010 to 2018. He worked on classification, anti-doping, rules, and governance as the organization prepared for major international competitions, including the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. These efforts supported the integrity and continued development of sitting volleyball.
Le Breuilly served as a technical delegate at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Those assignments reflected his expertise in competition operations and the respect he had earned within the international ParaVolley community.
During his years of service, World ParaVolley expanded its membership, developed ranking and governance systems, and advanced rules for Beach ParaVolley. Le Breuilly contributed to this work through technical and administrative roles, helping create a stronger foundation for future events and participants.
Le Breuilly's contributions were equally significant within officiating. For more than 45 years, he served as a referee across Volleyball England, FIVB Beach Volleyball, Standing Volleyball, and Sitting Volleyball competitions. His assignments included championship matches and major international events, where his professionalism and consistency became widely respected.
He also devoted countless hours to mentoring referees and educating officials around the world. Through clinics, training programs, and personal guidance, he helped develop people who continue to serve the sport. He was closely involved in building World ParaVolley's international training and certification pathways for referees, coaches, classifiers, and technical officials.
His lifelong commitment to volleyball has been recognized through numerous honors, including designation as a World ParaVolley Honorary Life Member and induction into the Volleyball England Hall of Fame. He also founded the Jersey Volleyball Association and served as its president for two decades, helping build and strengthen the sport in the Channel Islands.
For his visionary leadership, extraordinary service, and transformational contributions to ParaVolley and international volleyball, Denis Le Breuilly is honored as a member of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame Class of 2026.
