BIOGRAPHY
Juan Ángel Pereyra has had a profound and lasting impact on the sport of volleyball, not only as a player, but as a referee, where his dedication and expertise have raised the standards of officiating on the world stage. His career, spanning more than three decades, has made him one of the most respected and influential figures in world volleyball officiating.
Pereyra’s journey as an international referee began in 1980, and over the next 24 years, he established himself as a fixture at the highest levels of competition. His exceptional skill and impartiality earned him the honor of officiating at three Olympic Games: Barcelona in 1992 (Bronze Medal match), Sydney in 2000 (Gold Medal match), and Athens in 2004 (Gold Medal match). To be selected for even one Olympic Games is a testament to a referee’s abilities, but to be entrusted with officiating at three is a rare and distinguished achievement. Pereyra's presence at these prestigious events underscored his reputation as one of the best in the field.
Pereyra also made significant contributions off the court. He was a member of the FIVB Refereeing Commission, where his ideas and decisions helped shape the future of volleyball refereeing around the world. His leadership extended to the Control Committee at several international competitions, including the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where his expertise ensured the highest standards of impartiality and professionalism were upheld.
Even after his active refereeing career, Pereyra has remained deeply involved in the sport. As the President of the Tucumán Volleyball Federation, he has been instrumental in promoting volleyball at the regional level as well as a founding member and 2nd Vice President of the Argentine Volleyball Federation (FEVA). Additionally, his role as President of the Refereeing Commission of the South American Volleyball Confederation has allowed him to continue influencing the development of officiating standards across the continent.
Pereyra's commitment to advancing the art of refereeing is further demonstrated by his work in education. He has traveled widely to conduct FIVB refereeing courses, sharing his vast knowledge and experience with the next generation of referees. His efforts have been particularly impactful in the NORCECA region, where he has played a key role in raising the standard of officiating.
For his outstanding contributions to volleyball through his refereeing and leadership, The International Volleyball Hall of Fame is honored to induct Juan Ángel Pereyra as a referee.
