Rosa García Rivas is celebrated as one of the greatest setters in South American volleyball history, a visionary playmaker who led Peru through its most successful era on the international stage. Known as “La China” for her quickness and composure, Garcia orchestrated the Peruvian offense with unmatched vision, precision and leadership for nearly two decades.
A four-time Olympian, García Rivas’ crowning achievement came at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, where she guided Peru to a silver medal, narrowly missing gold in an epic five-set final. She also played pivotal roles in Peru’s medal-winning performances at the FIVB World Championships, securing silver in 1982 and bronze in 1986.
Dominance in the South American Championship further underscored García Rivas’ brilliance. She earned eight medals—including four golds—while twice being named Best Setter of the tournament. Her ability to blend strategic distribution with pinpoint accuracy made her the heartbeat of every team she led.
García Rivas’ professional career extended across multiple continents, with successful stints in Japan, Italy, Brazil, and her native Peru. Everywhere she played, she earned respect for her skill, consistency, and leadership.
