Biography

Al Fish has the distinction of being the first person in the Western Hemisphere to be named an International Official (1956).

International highlights of Fish's career include serving as the Head Official at the Central American Games (1954), Chief Official at the Pan-Am Games (1959), and selection to the Officials Commission at the World Championships in 1960.

He was the U.S. Representative to the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) World Congress in 1961, and the official World Games (1962), official Olympic Games (1964), and a member of the Jury of the World Championship (1966). He also served on the FIVB Officials Commission, which qualified other officials of the international rating.

At home, he coached and conducted clinics in the USVBA's region 13, served as the region's Chairman of Officials, attended USVBA National Championships as an official from 1952 to 1962, and was elected Secretary and Treasurer of the USVBA in 1956.

Fish received the USVBA's "Leader in Volleyball" Award in 1957, and the "Referee Emeritus" designation in 1981.
