BIOGRAPHY
André Meyer began his volleyball career in 1962 as a player with VC Bonnevoie Sud. It was four short years later Meyer was serving in an administrative role as the Club’s Treasurer and was introduced to the refereeing side of the game.
Meyer was recognized as a first-level referee and member of the Refereeing Commission of the Luxembourg Volleyball Federation in 1975. He was responsible for the education and evaluation of all volleyball referees based in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Meyer whistled his first international volleyball match in 1976 and received status as an International Volleyball Referee in 1978 - the same year he was elected to the Luxembourg Volleyball Federation Board of Administration. In 1985, he was elected President of the Federation and officiated the final round of the Men’s CEV Championship in the Netherlands.
Meyer was a constant advocate for the sport of volleyball and intent on seeing it grow. He is one of the founders of the CEV small countries group which he headed for more than 15 years and helped establish the European Championship – Small Countries Division in 1988.
He assisted in the relocation of CEV headquarters from Brussels to Luxembourg City in 1988 and in 1991 he was elected to the CEV Board of Administration as its President of the European Refereeing Commission. Meyer continued to take on bigger roles within the CEV being named Vice President in 1995 and elected President in 2001.
Meyer served as CEV President until 2015 - leading the CEV through times of unprecedented growth including the creation of the European Champions League for men and women; Implementation of the European circuit for Snow Volleyball – the first of its kind in the world; and creation of five regional development centers throughout Europe among many other programs and initiatives.
Meyer also brought his expertise to the FIVB serving many roles including Referee Commission President; Finance Commission President; and FIVB Executive Vice President.
Meyer has received several important recognitions – He was decorated with the “Golden Order of Sporting Merit” by the Luxembourg Government in 2001 and received the prestigious FIVB Grand Cross at the FIVB World Congress in 2016.
The FIVB Grand Cross was created by the FIVB in 1998 and is awarded to high-ranking government officials, heads of organizations and prominent figures in the sports world for their exceptional contribution to volleyball and beach volleyball.
For his contributions to the growth of volleyball in the European Confederation and at the FIVB, we are proud to induct André Meyer into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame as a Leader.
